I mix in remixes, deep cuts, and unexpected transitions to keep things fresh and unpredictable. A great DJ balances mainstream appeal with personal flair, ensuring the set feels unique rather than generic.

The tempo, key, and overall energy of a track determine when and how I play it. A high-energy song with a strong beat might be perfect for peak hours, driving the crowd into a frenzy. Meanwhile, a smooth groove can offer a breather, allowing the audience to reset before building up again. I also consider how songs mix together—seamless transitions maintain momentum and create an immersive experience.

Ultimately, my job is to read the room and adapt. A disc jockey doesn’t just play music; they craft an experience, blending nostalgia, excitement, and rhythm to keep people moving all night long.

Helping someone choose the right songs for their event is about more than just picking popular tracks—it’s about curating the perfect vibe that aligns with their vision. As an experienced DJ, my first step is understanding the event itself. What’s the occasion? A wedding, corporate gala, birthday party, or club night all demand different musical approaches. The guest demographic is crucial too—age range, cultural background, and personal preferences all influence the best selections.

I always ask clients about their must-play songs and, just as importantly, their do-not-play list. This ensures that the music reflects their tastes while avoiding any tracks that might not fit the mood. Then there are the songs we grew up with, songs that inspired us, songs that we cried to. In addition to that, there are always songs that bring a flood of memories: first love, first dance, firsts abound in our lives! From there, I consider the event’s timeline. A cocktail hour or dinner might call for smooth, background-friendly tunes, while a dance segment needs high-energy selections that build up at the right moments.

Flow is everything. The music should feel like a natural progression, starting with warm-up tracks to ease guests in, gradually increasing tempo and intensity to peak at the right moments, and winding down gracefully when needed. I also factor in transitions—songs should mix smoothly to maintain energy without abrupt stops or awkward shifts.

Finally, flexibility is key. Even the best-planned playlist needs room for adaptation. I always read the crowd and adjust based on their response. A great event soundtrack isn’t just a list of songs—it’s a living, breathing experience that keeps people engaged, entertained, and on their feet.

With all that being said, some people are just at a loss to choose even a small set of songs. Review of Custom Fit DJ

This review is on the DJ company called Custom Fit DJ. I will discuss the options they provide, some of the pricing and packages they offer, as well as give my opinion on their website for the user experience.

Custom Fit DJ is not a new company, which is usually a concern for soon-to-be-married couples. They don't usually want someone practicing on them for their big day. They've been around for a while (their domain was registered 5 years ago), and have accumulated a small following (460 people) on FB as of this writing. They do offer quite a few impressive services for any potential client, whether it be for a wedding, corporate event, a festival, or just family getting together for graduations, birthdays, and anniversaries. Let's dive into some of these options.

Lighting, in a wide variety of forms, is one of their big sellers. Who knew their could be so many ways to lighten up your fun day?! There is haze lighting, which produces that hazy look seen in smoky bars, but without the coughing. This gives a particular ambience needed for certain events, or even a mood for an announcement. Then there is pin spot lighting, which is a focused projection of light on an item, area, or group. This can be great when making announcements, or if you want to highlight a wedding cake, or maybe an award. There is also up lighting, which is a customizable way of lighting up the walls in a room to your particular tastes, needs and wants. This can be done monochromatic, or any variety you desire, even set to music! How fun is that! Then there is also a DJ booth that can be set up with programmable lights, along with totem poles alongside it for a bigger wow effect. And, wall projections, such as a photo, that can be illuminated all over the venue! So much to choose from...

Custom Fit DJ also offers two different photo "booths". One is a selfie booth for 1-2 people, and the other is a 360 degree set up for a group. They are set up in a room, or off to the side of your venue. You can choose from many different backdrops, and it comes with plenty of lighting. There is also a disco ball that can be hung, for those who like to relive the 70's and 80's. There are monograms you can create that can be hung on a wall, or an art piece you can have made that can be a decoration or perhaps a memorabilia to take pictures around. If you like live music, they are offering some musicians they partner with to add to the play list you set up. Then, there is a silent disco option, with headsets for the guests (in case a sound curfew goes into effect b4 the party is over!). Custom Fit DJ also offers videography shots, up to 7 hours of filming! In addition, they will do content creation of all your photos. Last, but not least, an audio guest book for people to leave you heart warming messages on your important day. Quite the impressive array of options for any party to be a rousing success. The owner, Mike, has incorporated great ideas for memorializing those cherished memories.

Pricing is obviously a concern for many couples, businesses, or families. So, let's dive into that. Their website states that their average price for DJ services ranges from $1600 to $3000. That is just the basic services that almost all DJ's offer, such as sound equipment, basic lighting, announcements, four hours of music, etc. All of the options listed up top are extra, of course. The ultimate package they offer is upwards of $7500, which includes most, but not all, of the above options. Substituting is allowed, so you can truly "Custom Fit" your day. And of course, they have packages in between those ranges, and some give discounts if you choose options.

They may also offer some less expensive options for those on a tighter budget. This is something that you'll need to discuss with them directly. For all of the work they provide, I feel this is a fair price range, and apparently, their customers feel that way too, based on the positive reviews.

As far as their website, FB page, and Google business profile, it is lacking a bit. They aren't updating blogs on the website (nothing in the last 4 years), they only post on FB about 10 times a year, and their Google business profile has zero updated photos or posts. Now, with a company this popular, they are probably focusing on their DJ'ing, and not so much on SEO. Perfectly acceptable for a business as busy and as popular as Custom Fit DJ. They are, however, being actively promoted on the wedding site called, The Knot, which is pricey to be featured on, as they are. However, it seems to be a good gamble for them, as The Knot is a heavily visited website for weddings.

Despite their lackluster performance on the website, FB, & GBP, overall I feel this is a great company to model any DJ business after. I commend them for a job well done! But on the flip side, if you are needing DJ services for your wedding, corporate party, or any family get together, and you feel overwhelmed by some of the pricing, DJ Tempe offers no frills packages for the last minute party planner. Perhaps all the fancy options aren't for you, or you may have other people providing photos/videos, and other options. Well, that's where DJ Tempe can come to the rescue. While we definitely have the usual sound, & lighting equipment, as well as emceeing abilities that is expected of a disc jockey, we also offer less expensive options to choose from. The DJ responsibilities depends on you, plus the quality of the DJ you hired. Both factor in equally.

First and foremost, you control the shots! You can request the Deejay to hold off on announcements, or give them full control within certain guidelines. This is most common. Most people have an idea of how they want their party to flow, and at what points certain songs or speeches need to be made. You can detail this for your disc jockey, preferably on paper, so there's no confusion, but verbal is fine if it's not too complicated.

Do you want your DJ to announce games, introduce the wedding couple, or perhaps make announcements about special guests, toasts, or maybe even pop quizzes about the VIP? Almost all DJ's enjoy highlighting these things. You have to decide if you like their voice, their style, and their particular vocabulary usage. Talking with them for 10 mins or so before hiring them is a great way to determine this.

Do you have a certain genre of music to be played for the kids or teens, then later need the classics for the mature guests? Not a problem! Are there some songs you loathe or love? You can nix the one and play the other several times, if wanted. Communication with your DJ professional is the key here.

You may find yourself needing to change up the order due to an unforeseen situation. A good disc jockey will be flexible and willing to make adjustments on the fly. It's also a great idea to make sure your pro knows who will be giving them instructions for your event. Too many bosses can create havoc.

The DeeJay you hire should have at least 20-30 paid events under their belt. Also, if you want a disc jockey for your wedding (or other specific event), make sure they have done multiple weddings before, not just parties. Weddings are usually more structured, and the brides typically have solid ideas on how the reception should go. It may be best to not leave it up to chance for the DJ to fill in. It's a great idea to give the prospective pro a couple of scenarios to see how they would handle that. Are they receptive to your suggestions or corrections? You'll be able to sense this in their demeanor, and responses.

Undecided?

Still not sure about who to choose to emcee your event? Why not ask them for referrals from previous customers? While not all customers agree up front to do this, some forward thinking DJ's will ask satisfied customers to be willing. Also, check out their reviews online. Are the negative reviews reasonable? Spend some time asking your would-be-hire about why this customer was unhappy and left them a poor review. Got some time to decide? Have a scenario or two to quiz the DJ on how they would handle that. Ask the DJ if you can attend one of their future events so you can see them in action. A short 20-30 mins seeing them working the crowd can do a lot to assuage your fears.

While we obviously would love it if you chose DJ Tempe, but either way, using these suggestions will help insure your special event will come off without a hitch!

Biggest Do of the DJ

A professional DJ will know how to read the crowd! They will scan the rom consistently to maintain crowd control. A true DJ will know that the crowd is everything that will cue your timing, songs, and experience. They watch what people are doing. Making eye contact with some of the dancers, having their head on a swivel. They are gauging the vibes of the crowd. If a track tends to create a bored environment, they know to switch it up. And when not to switch it up! We've all experienced a DJ who changed the song in the middle of an apex crowd hype.

How about a DJ who had his own playlist in mind, instead of the Bride's? There are some serious do's and don't when it comes to being a great disc jockey.
Think about some of the DJ greats: Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Porter Robinson, Paul Oakenfold, Martin Garrix, David Guetta. Not all of them play the same kind of music either! If you pay attention though, there is something they all have in common. They studied the crowd. They weren't enveloped in their own heads, trying to make amazing beats for themselves. They were there for the people. The crowd. The wave of rhythm that runs through the mob of people cheering at their music. They chased after the feeling you get when the beats have aligned with the pumping of your heart. The loudness in the dancing fans that happens when their happiness is exploding. True disc jockeys are looking for their way to imprint on the rhythm of our lives.

Sure, knowing the equipment is huge. If you can't turn on your turn table then we have bigger issues here. Engaging with and interacting with the groups of paying listeners is the real key here. When the career is on the line for an important wedding, quincenera, or live music event, they know that eye contact will be of utmost importance. Perhaps the bride has a specific list she wants played. Do they take a whim and base it off the vibin' after partyers? One look at the bride may tell them. Sure communication is great, but what if she is loving the hype and changes her mind? Another scan and eye contact told us everything. Another look around and DJ spotted the cake and a potential accident. Reading the room and the itinerary helps set the mood for an even better entrance.

So no matter how amazing of a professional disc jockey you are, if you aren't studying your music environment and emotional affects of your music, there won't be anymore parties for you. If grandma is upset about the volume of the music, be sure you're going to hear about it. If you didn't have a back up set list in case the music wasn't a cultural fit, be ready for some empty dance floors. All of these things can be avoided with a DJ who is ready to study. Ready to observe and prepared for the worst.
